One — give it the long version, not the tidy version. Paste the whole email thread, the full doc, the raw notes. The more real context it has, the less it guesses. Trimming the input to save time is the most common way people get generic output.
Two — make it argue with itself. “Give me the strongest case for this, then the strongest against.” “What’s the most likely reason this fails?” Stress-test the decision before you commit.
Three — ask for the reasoning, then the answer. “Think through this step by step before you answer.” Having it show its work surfaces the flawed assumption you’d otherwise miss.
Four — hand it a role and a standard. “You’re a CFO reviewing this budget — what three questions would you ask?” A defined role plus a clear bar for quality turns generic into useful.
Five — push the draft, don’t accept it. “Cut this by 40%.” “That’s too safe — give me the sharper version.” The first output is a starting point; the quality lives in round two and three.
One copy-paste win — paste this before any decision: “Here’s a decision I’m leaning toward: [describe it]. Before I commit, give me the three strongest arguments against it, the one assumption I’m most likely getting wrong, and what would have to be true for this to be the right call. Be direct, not diplomatic.”
